Abstract

The article brings together textual, archaeological and geographical data in an attempt to date the list of Rehoboam's fortified cities (II Chr 11,5-12). It shows that the list does not correspond to any Iron Age reality and that it fits the period of Hasmonean rule, probably in the days of John Hyrcanus in the second half of the 2nd century BCE. The article then discusses the historical circumstances that could have led to the composition of the list.
