Abstract

The Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in ytterbium-doped fiber amplifiers were studied using rate-equation model. The ASE in the three level system ytterbium-doped laser was more pronounced as compared to the RBS. The amplifier noise figure was observed to be higher in backward pumping, resulting in a lower signal-to-noise ratio.
