Abstract

Hemangiosarcoma of the spleen is a rare entity with only 58 reported cases. It is a highly malignant tumor and, in 80% of the cases, metastases are already present at the time of diagnosis. Thirty percent of the patients present with spontaneous rupture of the spleen. This event is catastrophic and results in rapid dissemination of the disease, deterioration, and death. An additional case of hemangiosarcoma of the spleen presenting as spontaneous rupture is described. Despite repeated laparotomies, the histopathological diagnosis was made at a late stage of the disease.
