Abstract

The etiology of autoimmune diseases is multifactorial and elusive. Several lines of evidence point toward the role of stress in influencing the immune system. Stress is an ill-defined term that includes the psychophysiological reactions that occur when the body's internal milieu is disturbed. Stress has been associated with various aspects of autoimmune diseases including disease onset and exacerbations. In this chapter, we aim to review the influence of stress on the immune system and autoimmune disease and to inspect the role of psychological therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy on autoimmune disease outcomes.
