Abstract

Pruritus ani is a common condition afflicting up to 5% of the population and characterized by an unpleasant, severely irritating, and sometimes burning sensation of the perianal region (1). In the majority of patients, pruritis ani is a primary (idiopathic) condition with no apparent pathological cause. The idiopathic condition varies in its incidence from 25% to 95%, according to different series (2,3). Conversely, secondary pruritis ani may result from a large number of medical disorders including dermatological, proctological, and systemic diseases.
