Abstract

Prophylactic administration of tetracycline was prospectively evaluated in 224 consecutive patients undergoing Caesarian section. In combination with penicillin or erythromycin, this regimen was compared with a previous study with antibiotics but without added tetracycline. A significant reduction in postoperative infections was achieved, from 18.7% in our previous study, to 7.6% in the present study (p<0.005). This improvement may be due to reduction of anaerobes and mycoplasma. It is suggested that the use of tetracycline as a prophylaxis in Caesarian section will improve the results reported with other antibiotic regimens.
