N2 - We review the main propagation effects that take place in fibers for Space-Division Multiplexing, focusing on their impact on system performance. We specifically address the interplay between modal dispersion (MD) and nonlinear distortions, and show that the increase in coherent MIMO-DSP complexity implied by MD is balanced by a MD-induced mitigation of the nonlinear distortions.
