Abstract

The paper introduces a method to detect bird flocks in heavy weather clutter environment using weather radar images. Dominant characteristics of bird targets were found in order to discriminate the flocks from weather clutter. The innovation of the proposed method is introduction of tracking method for discriminate bird flocks against the clutter. Moreover, tracking provides additional features of bird flocks, which emanate from the tracking process itself. First prototype of this application was implemented and evaluated at Israely Air Force during the spring bird migration of 2007.
