Abstract

The structural changes of undoped LaMnO₃ under high hydrostatic pressure and their relation to the electronic properties were studied. The pronounced cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion and the GdFeO₃-type distortion decreased with increasing pressure. Evidence was obtained that LaMnO₃ is a Mott insulator.
