Pressure-induced quenching of the Jahn-Teller distortion and insulator-to-metal transition in LaMnO3

Abstract

The structural changes of undoped LaMnO3 under high hydrostatic pressure and their relation to the electronic properties were studied. The pronounced cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion and the GdFeO3-type distortion decreased with increasing pressure. Evidence was obtained that LaMnO3 is a Mott insulator.
