Abstract

The purpose of the present chapter is to introduce in detail the Production Infant Scale Evaluation (PRISE) parent questionnaire and to discuss the rationale that led to its development (Kishon-Rabin et al., 2005). The chapter is divided into three major sections. The first discusses the theoretical and empirical basis for the relationship between auditory perception and speech production and provides the theoretical background for developing the PRISE. The second part is a detailed elaboration of each of the PRISE questions, whereas the third part is devoted to describing the PRISE data in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired infants and its validation with direct measures of hearing. The authors argue that the PRISE is a clinically feasible tool for assessing pre lexical vocalizations in infants younger than 1 year of age and that it is sensitive to the effects of auditory deprivation, auditory feedback, age at implantation, unilateral hearing loss and premature birth
