note = "Funding Information: The Dead Sea rift (like other major continental rifts) is associated with large sedimentary basins. In spite of many geophysical and geological studies, the origin and nature of these basins are not very well understood. An international workshop on Sedimentay Basins within Continental Rift Zones with a special emphasize on the Dead Sea rift was held in Ramot Village, near the Sea of Galilee, Israel, April 28-May 1, 1985, to review and evaluate various aspects of sedimentary basins within continental rifts. The workshop was supported and sponsored by the Gordon Center for Energy Studies at Tel Aviv University and organized by the Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences at Tel Aviv University. Altogether about eighty scientists and students attended the meeting. Participants came from eight different countries. During the workshop, two field trips along the Dead Sea rift were held. Papers on various aspects of sedimentary basins within continental rifts were presented and were followed by lively discussions, demonstrating the interest in this topic. Discussions were focused on basins within the Dead Sea rift, Gulf of Suez, East African rift system, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Rio Grande rift system, Rhinegraben rift system, Strait of Sicily rift zone, San Andreas transfo~ system and sedimentary basins within the Canadian Cordillera. Other problems associated with continental rifting were also discussed. Among them were the problem of rift propagation, thermal regimes in rift basins, the relation of volcanism to the timing as well as the location of rift zones, the nature of the crust and upper mantle structure of rift zones, and the mechanism of continental rifting.",
