Abstract

The pion-nucleus total cross-section is decomposed into elastic scattering, inclusive inelastic scattering, true absorption and single charge exchange reactions, as a function of energy and nuclear mass number. The inclusive inelastic scattering is discussed in terms of quasi free and multiple scattering processes. Several approaches for the treatment of true absorption are discussed. The coupling between absorption and scattering is described and related to experimental observations.
