Abstract

Psysiological pigmentation due to melanin in the gingiva was found in 18.1% of 783 young chosen at random. The incidence varied significantly among the various ethnic groups. Yemenites showed the highest incidence (62.5%). Ashkenazim and Sephardin (South European, Balkan and Turkish origin) the lowest (each 3%) and those of North African and Asian origin (Yemenites excepted) between 14 and 37%.
