Abstract

Early evidence for the hadronic nature of the photon and its description by the vector dominance model are reviewed. The concepts of direct and resolved photon interaction and the photon structure function are introduced and experimental support for them is presented. Methods of estimating the total photoproduction cross section at high energies based on QCD and on Regge-inspired extrapolations are described and confronted with the first data from HERA. Finally, some tasks for the photoproduction working group are outlined.
