Abstract

The dimethyl steroidalphosphonates 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 25, 27, 33, 34 and 35 were prepared and characterized. A configuration was assigned to the first five compounds listed, on the basis of the Cotton Effects exhibited by lactone 11. The order of steps in the conversion of 26 to 27 was elucidated as 6 → 28 → 30 → 32 → 27. Attempts to convert some of the compounds reported herein to 4-phosphasteroids were unsuccessful. The etherification of alcohols by dimethyl phosphite under acid catalysis was noted.
