Abstract

A direct pathogenic effect of many antibodies has been proven, although in other cases the mechanisms whereby they cause damage are not clear. Some well-defined mechanisms of autoantibody-mediated tissue/cell damage include binding to surface molecules (on cell membrane and subsequent cell death or change of molecular function without cytolysis), immune complex-mediated tissue damage, interaction and modification of intracellular antigens, and binding to extracellular molecules.
