Abstract

During the past decade, there has been a rapid progress in the development of glass fibers of extremely low loss. Until now, the main challenge has been the use of these fibers in communication systems. But, lately, there has been an increasing recognition of the enormous possibilities for utilizing these optical fibers in medical applications. Three revolutionary uses of the fibers - endoscopy, diagnostics, and power transmission - are reviewed in this paper.
