Abstract

Future integrated fiberoptic systems may incorporate fiber bundles for imaging plus single fibers for diagnostic or therapeutic laser beam transmission. Novel fiberoptic techniques will revolutionize many fields in medicine. Ultrathin laser endoscopes, for example, may replace major surgical procedures by offering the ability to perform microsurgical operations inside the body. Such systems could be used to treat cancer or to 'open up' blocked arteries.
