Abstract
The transmission of analog sources over channels with unknown signal to noise ratio (SNR) was discussed. It was shown that for every analog source with smooth density transmitted over an AWGN channel with unknown but high signal to noise ratio (SNR), a single system achieves R (D) ≈ C for all SNR's. It was shown that if the source is Gaussian and the channel bandwidth is larger than twice the source bandwidth, then no single encoder can achieve the ideal rate-distortion bound for all values of SNR.
