N2 - Indefinite articles are involved in delicate, deep and highly interesting philosophical and linguistic distinctions. The central problem under discussion here is that of specific (and also non-specific) indefinite expressions. The first part of the present paper (ch. 2) is devoted to a critical discussion of current linguistic and logical theories. Ch. 3 summarizes the results of this discussion. Chs. 4 and 5 include our new approach, formulated both in terms of possible-worlds-and-possible-contexts-of-utterance-semantics and of Hintikka's language games. Theoretical conclusions are drawn in the following discussions.
