Abstract

The systematics of the 3-1 state energies in even-even nuclei are investigated mainly with a Skyrme III, but also other interactions. The octupole polarizability is also calculated. The questions of octupole stability and why 3-1 state energies do not vary smoothly with mass number are considered. The determining factor seems to be the single-particle spectrum that is obtained in a self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation. The proper treatment of continuum channels is of paramount importance in getting the energies right.
