Abstract

A new and more accurate approach to the design of solar cell arrays is presented. This approach is based on the analysis of the solar cell connections within the array, where varying connections can assure a more efficient performance and a better use of the electrical energy produced. This analysis includes the study of the optimum way to charge the storage batteries taking into account load characteristics, radiation levels and other operational conditions. The method of determining the optimum point, which is based on the coupling of the load to the solar cell array (SCA) by means of a two-port with a DC transformer characteristic, is novel. The system for operating the SCA at its maximum power point can be described as a coupling of the SCA to a non-matched load by means of a DC transformer (DCT) with a varying transformation ratio.
