Abstract

A theory is presented which virtually solves the problem of shock formation from multidimensional weak discontinuities. It is shown that the mathematical formulation may be considerably simplified, the problem finally reducing to an ordinary differential equation for a scalar quantity. Analytic solutions may be obtained under favorable conditions, not the least of which is knowledge of an analytic solution describing the state into which the wave propagates.
