Abstract
Aims to draw attention to the neglected dimension of risk as an explanatory variable of rural-urban migration in LDCs. Suggests that an optimizing, risk-averse small farmer family tries to diversify its income by placing its best-suited member in the urban sector. Further suggests that if the decision-making unit is the individual, rural-urban migration may also be adopted as a means of resolving aversion to risk. -from Authors
