Abstract
Let s and u be nonconjugate elements of a finite group and let a, b, and c be complex numbers, ab ≠ 0. Groups satisfying aX(s) + bX(u) = c for every non-principal irreducible character X are completely classified. They are the PSL(2, 2n), n ≥ 2 and some solvable group of derived length at most 3.
