Abstract
A mathematical formulation is given of the dynamic routing problem in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) operation, and a stationary policy is developed. This policy, an extension of the (s,S) policy commonly used in inventory control, has the virtue of easy implementation on actual manufacturing systems. It is demonstrated that this policy can improve FMS performance, in throughput, workload balance and reduction of work-in-process inventory. However, further experience and simulation results are required in order to establish conclusive quantitative results.
