abstract = "A general scheme for collecting information in a system of computers connected by a local area network is presented. The scheme allows data to be exchanged efficiently and quickly among many machines without broadcasting. In addition, certain operations can be performed on the data while they are being collected. The scheme tolerates fail-stop type of failures of a large subset of the machines with little degradation in performance. Several applications to distributed computing are discussed, including collecting status information and performing load balancing.",
