Abstract

Microfluidic channels containing an ionic permselective medium (e.g. porous membrane) are commonly used for biomolecule preconcentration for enhanced biosensing. Herein, we show the ability to dynamically activate/deactivate a perm-selective medium by integrating individually addressable microvalves and a uniformly coated membrane film within a microchannel. We demonstrated that the interplay of bulk-membrane ionic transport can be controlled by activating the microvalve and enables a dynamic control on the developed concentration-polarization and associated preconcentrated molecule plug. This ability introduces a robust and simple way to implement a variety of functionalities into lab-on-a-chip devices, e.g. sensitive multiplex sensing, fouling prevention, and steric filtration.
