Abstract

A case of Wernicke's encephalopathy with rare ophthalmological manifestations is presented. The classical syndrome, which is characterized by confusion, ataxia, nystagmus and external ophthalmoplegia, appeared in the authors' case as a complication of hyperemesis gravidarum. Apart from the classical signs, there were peripapillary retinal hemorrhages, hyperemia and swollen discs, a rarely, if ever, described finding in this serious, but treatable, disease.
