Abstract

A continuum theory for the analysis of nonlinear elastic wave propagation normal to the layering of periodically bilaminated composites is presented. The theory incorporates the nonlinear constitutive behavior of the elastic layers, and predicts the time-dependent response of the composite to impact. Wave propagation in laminated media consisting of linearly elastic layers can be treated as a special case of the theory.
