Abstract

A vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is a semiconductor laser with a two-dimensional resonator and thus is ideal for the implementation of ring shaped laser with periodic boundary conditions in the azimuthal coordinate. The evolution of the electric field in this laser medium was modeled using the 1D wave equation which is applicable for large diameter ring shaped lasers. The paraxial wave equation, which is valid for the VCSEL geometry, is written for the electrical field and given by the equation (1).
