Abstract

Thin, wide, strips like sapphire specimens were fractured under three point bending. The fracture surfaces of the specimens were investigated using nonlinear analysis. The crack profiles were analyzed using correlation dimension, false nearest neighbor, and null hypothesis surrogate data methods and found to be a spatial occurrence of a chaotic deterministic system with at least seven dimensions, in contrast to only one independent variable used in current analytical calculations.
