Abstract
A case of late newborn drug withdrawal syndrome due to maternal addiction is described. The presenting symptoms were irritability, vomiting, hypertonia, sneezing and generalized convulsions. Resolution of symptoms followed treatment with paragoric and methadone. The condition is associated with a significant increase in perinatal morbidity and mortality due to the factors of premature delivery, small-for-date infants, severe neonatal infections and possible permanent neurological damage.
