Abstract

Villages in the Arabic rural areas of Israel and Israel-held territory have been undergoing a process of transformation and have been developing new geographical characteristics during the last 3 - 5 decades. The settlements are crawling from the peaks towards the valleys to more convenient sites. At the same time the inhabitants of the villages have been increasingly commuting to urban areas where the job situation is better. Wage earning outside the rural areas has become the dominant factor in the economy of most villages while agriculture is relegated to secondary importance or even to minor significance. In this way a great number of villages have been turned into labour settlements. -English summary
