Near- and far-field approximation for analyzing flame heating and welding

Abstract

An approximate method to calculate residual distortion in welded and flame heated structures is suggested. It is based on estimating a boundary dividing the structure into a near and a far field. These fields differ in their constitutive relations. The near field is subject to thermoelastic-plastic mechanics, whereas the far field behaves elastically. The role of the loading conditions that exist in the base and the weld metal is discussed and the relation between flame heating and welding is clarified. Several case studies are given including a comparison with finite-element results.
