Abstract
To the Editor: In their study of the feasibility of diagnosing nasopharyngeal carcinoma through the detection of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) in tissues by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Feinmesser et al. (Jan. 2 issue)1 found no detectable EBV DNA in “normal” tonsillar lymphocytes, leukocytes from EBV-seropositive blood donors, or disease-free lymph nodes from patients with other head and neck tumors. Since the incidence of both nasopharyngeal carcinoma and EBV infection in Hong Kong (which is geographically part of southern China) is high, we too have used PCR to look for EBV DNA in tissues from various sites in.
