Abstract

Most direction-finding systems currently in use are based on phase-only measurements. In this paper the performance of these systems in the presence of mutual coupling is examined. It is shown that phase-only direction-finding systems are statistically efficient in the absence of mutual coupling, but they lose this property when mutual coupling is present. Included here are a description of a phase-only algorithm, an analysis of its performance, derivation of the Cramer-Rao bounds for the direction estimates, and some numerical examples.
