Abstract
Long-wavelength emission from 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)benzonitrile is assigned to a protonated molecule (deuterium isotope effect). Utilizing solvent polarity parameters, three other emissions are identified: planar monomer, perpendicular monomer, and dimer. The protonated emitting species occurs only in proton-donor solvents; the ratio of monomer protonated molecule emissions is viscosity and wavelength dependent.
