Multiple fluorescences from the excited state of N-methyl-2-N-phenyl-amino-6-naphthalenesulphonate in glycerol: Fast proton transfer

Abstract

Remarkably different emission spectra result from high energy excitation (exc 360 nm, emi λmax 405 nm) and low energy excitation (exc 400 nm, emi λmax 468 nm) of N-methyl-N-ethyl and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-N-phenylamino-6-naphthalenesulphonate in glycerol. The latter emission is that expected, and the former is ascribed to a form in which a proton has been transferred in a fast step to the 1-position of the naphthalene ring.
