Abstract
It is shown that fluctuations may change the order of phase transitions, in contrast to that predicted by the Landau theory. In systems in which this happens, one or two tricritical points may be observed as the result of a uniaxial symmetry breaking. These theoretical results have recently been experimentally confirmed on the structural displacive phase transitions of several perovskites.
