Abstract

The effects of infrared (IR) light modulation in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides by illumination with visible modulated continuous laser beam of moderate power were studied. The waveguide light was coupled-in from semiconductor laser into the SOI based waveguide by an optical fiber. The modulation depth of the reference IR wave was measured as a function of power of the visible control light. The control visible light was modulated up to a frequency of 100 kHz using an acousto-optic modulator.
