N2 - We present the theory of Raman amplification in multi-mode fiber structures in the framework of space-division multiplexed transmission. Random linear coupling between the various fiber modes plays a critical role in the process of amplification by equalizing the Raman gain within quasi-degenerate mode groups. The equations governing Raman amplification in this regime are presented and discussed.
