N2 - We describe the modeling of noise that is caused by nonlinear interference between channels in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) fiber-optic systems. We discuss the physical mechanisms that are responsible for the formation of this noise, and relate the physical picture to the noise properties that are relevant in system operation. Most importantly we discuss the features of temporal correlations, phase-noise, and dependence on modulation format, and explain how they can be exploited for nonlinearity mitigation.
