Abstract

We introduce SU(2) vector and axial-vector currents into the two-dimensional world sheet of the dual resonance model. The currents satisfy the constraints of current algebra and chiral symmetry. The pion appears as a Goldstone boson and multipion amplitudes satisfy all current-algebra theorems. The normal modes describing the propagation of currents through the hadronic medium carry the quantum numbers of nonstrange quarks. The model suggests that the order of magnitude of total cross sections is given by fπ-2, the square of the inverse of the pion decay constant (fπ190 MeV), as suggested by Pagels. Although π-A1 and ρ-f0 exchange degeneracy must be imposed artificially, the resulting restricted model retains all the good properties mentioned above.
