Abstract

Ranging from Antiquity to the present, the volume highlights facets of the interplay between Jewish life and customs and examines their impact and implications on the individual and the community. Whereas law is a product of legislation of official bodies, customs evolve spontaneously and reflect deeper social and mythical roots. These ascending grass-roots tendencies are followed by the people and are subsequently accepted as binding.
