Abstract

Microwave-drilling techniques [1,2] are studied for drilling and cutting operations in various types of glasses. The paper presents the experimental setups and processes, and recent microwave-drilling results in various glasses. Specific aspects of microwave-drilling in glasses, in particular the formation of stresses and cracks and their prevention, are elaborated. The feasibility of practical microwave drills for glasses, and their advantages and limitations are discussed.
