Abstract

The Parity Nonconserving (PNC) spreading widths ΓPNC of compound nuclear states are investigated using a microscopic approach based on the theory of an induced PNC interaction. The calculations are performed for a wide range of nuclear masses so that the mass dependence of the PNC spreading width can be studied. While the quantity ΓPNC undergoes fluctuations, its overall A dependence is found to be ΓPNC ∼ A1/3, in both the analytical estimates and the calculated values. The relation to other models and to other types of spreading widths is also discussed.
