Abstract
A method is suggested for determining the fracture toughness of sheet materials by testing small-size laboratory specimens. The method consists in the following: the dependence of the nonpropagating crack length on the maximum load level is determined on specimens with a central through crack and under cyclic loading. These data with allowance for the values of the modulus of elasticity and yield strength of the material permit calculating the critical value of the stress intensity coefficient which is directly determined only while testing large-size specimens.
