Abstract

Meiosis in Schizophyllum commune is asynchronous. Various stages of the first meiotic division can be detected. The only stage in which the bivalents are spread sufficiently is metaphase I. Based on counts in metaphase I it is proposed that n=8. The synaptinemal complex of Schizophyllum consists of a banded lateral component with a 240 Å repeating unit. The dimensions of the complex are similar in size to that found in Boletus. Fibrils fill the central region. The complex is often found in association with the nuclear membrane.
