Abstract

Very simple, explicit expressions for the mean time to lose lock (MTLL) of a certain second order coherent pseudonoise (PN) code tracking loop are given by applying the classical results of Kramers. Such loops are essential in various spread spectrum systems (Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for example), and their MTLL is commonly used as a performance measure of their operation. The dependence of the MTLL on the "loop offset" due to Doppler shift is presented, and optimal loop parameters which maximize the MTLL are proposed.
